No single storage location is a complete backup. A phone can fail, an external drive can be misplaced and a cloud account can be locked or deleted.

A practical setup keeps one working copy on the device, one automatic copy in a reputable cloud service and one periodic copy on a drive stored separately.

Test recovery before you need it. A backup is only useful when you know how to restore the files, have the necessary credentials and can confirm that recent photos are included.
